Introducing my brother

As the only child in my family, I often found myself bored and without anyone to play with. However, at the age of eight, everything changed when I finally met my long- forgotten brother. His name was ‘Computer’, or sometimes ‘Mac’ for a nickname, he soon became my best friend and a playmate. Though it may seem strange to some, my computer was like an actual human brother to me, always there for me to have fun with and explore new ideas.

While it's true that my computer was so frustrating at times - not understanding my words, keeping me up late, or driving me crazy, and himself going crazy from the errors I created- I found that being with it brought out the best in me. Together, we were like superheroes, able to imagine anything and make it a reality and create new values, even in hardships, which Friedrich Nietzsche called this state of being an 'Übermensch', and I felt like I was living up to that ideal when I was with my computer.

Every moment spent with my computer was filled with new possibilities, as we worked together on all sorts of projects - from small divertissement to meaningful solutions to social problems. Our favorite activity was creating inventions, with me providing the ideas and my computer bringing them to life. Through these experiences, I developed strong values for life and a sense of purpose, asking myself what kind of person I wanted to be and how I could use my skills and abilities to make a positive impact on the world.

Although my "brother" was just a machine or a piece of metal, to put it badly, which runs on electricity rather than food, lives for only a few years, and can’t even speak Korean, nor English, he was much more to me. He was my friend, partner, dream chasing teammate, and even my fiancé. My computer allowed me to immortalize my ideas, share my works with the world, and achieve my dreams. Through studying computer science, I hope to better understand how to work with computers and use them to accomplish meaningful things more efficiently and easily.

While some may view my computer as just a piece of metal, to me he was much more than that. He was a creative partner who helped me realize my potential as a person. His limitations forced me to think more creatively and find new ways to communicate, collaborate, and solve problems.

Through my experiences with my computer, I have come to appreciate the power of technology to transform our lives and society. I am eager to continue exploring this field through my studies in computer science, with the hope of contributing to new breakthroughs and innovations that can positively impact our world.

As I move forward, I will always cherish the memories and lessons learned from my time with my computer. He was not just a tool nor a machine, but a trusted friend who helped me grow and thrive in ways that I never thought possible. I am grateful for the unique bond we shared, and look forward to the many new adventures that lie ahead.

  1. I like the writing style that doesn't twist and portray directly. And I loved the metaphor you used to the computer and you keep used brother rather than using computer.

  2. Very interesting how you personified computer as your brother, your friend, and even fiance. I also like the development of how the computer being your friend at first and now being your future. Best thing about the essay was how you gave your own meaning to the computer, just like the act of "calling names" in 꽃by김춘수, or that of "Tame" in the little prince. Nice personal essay!

  4. It was interesting to get to know what field you are interested in, why you fell in love with it, and what you'd like to do with it from now on. The personification was appropriately done to show your complex affection towards computer. I'll be rooting for you, so keep up the good work!

  5. Although it fails to explain any specialized moment only you experienced with your computer, I could see a glimpse of your true love towards coding/computer/macbook. I hope you keep on developing yourself in that field and become a great hacker/coder!

  6. Very clear and effectively written (as a first draft). This approach can generate a lot of fun and humor, and I think you can continue exploring that and adding splashes of color here and there to end up with a much better version of this (if you wanted to use it as a college essay). Right now, I think your brother needs a name, maybe we need to know more about your past brothers, and how you truly came to understand him etc. What does your brothers future hold and is he younger or older and will he live on? Like Frankenstein, you have to give birth to something new and you have done that to an extent, but I think you can go further and dwell more on your path and history as you dove into computers - be it harddrives or languages or even hacking Minecraft etc. A lot of CS students might write similar essays so going further than them will help you.

  7. It was not a person or animal that changed your life, it was a computer. I was first surprised about that fact and also impressed you described your life specifically.

  8. 김나영(Naomi Kim): I could definitely see that you are a computer guy and how you are into computer science but I’d like to see more on which aspect of computer you really like about or some detailed stories with it. Also, I think it would have been more fun if you personified computer a bit more as your real brother. (especially on the part on his food or malfunctioning you mentioned)
